Traction

Traction mainly involves the use of mechanical force to decompress and separate the vertebral joints and soft tissue around the spine. This helps to straighten the spine and allow it to heal. Oftentimes, traction is also used to treat neck pain. Issues such as degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, pinched nerves and sciatica can be treated through this therapy.

Traction can be done manually or mechanically. In manual traction, the physiotherapist will use his/her hands to put people in a state of traction. He/she will then use manual force on the joints and muscles to widen the spaces between the vertebrae. In mechanical traction, the patient will lie on a table, and the therapist will attach ropes, slings and pulleys to the body to mechanically relieve pressure.
