HOW IS PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT (PKR) PERFORMED?

An orthopedic surgeon carves away the damaged part of your knee and replaces it with either plastic or metal implants. This artificial joint is attached to the shin bone and thigh bone with acrylic cement to hold the artificial joint in place.

Preoperative Preparation:

Choosing The Right Implant:

If you are a candidate for surgery, your Surgeon will determine the best type of implant that is right for you. The types of implants we have at Zoi are

Follow up sessions with the doctor at the end of six weeks is advised, you could get back to work and depending on your health condition and age. Complete recovery would take 8 months to 1 year.

FAQ's

A simple one and a half hour PKR procedure to make sure you live pain-free until the end of time. You will be able to move on the day of surgery or next morning with a walker assistance, guided by our physical therapist. By end of six weeks or a month depending on your health condition and age, you would be able to go back to work as ‘you’ again.

PKR is carried out so that patient can live pain-free and is able to carry out daily activities independently. It helps to alleviate the dependency on painkillers and lead a happy life. After completion of the procedure, the patient is under the care of an intensivist, operating surgeon, physical therapist, and dietician. Pain control measures are taken immediately and gradual rehabilitation is supervised by the team to ensure that patient is discharged in a stable condition.

Once discharged the physical therapist follows the patient at home and guides through the process of rehabilitation.

Alternatives to the procedure at early stage of arthritis and pain include anti-inflammatory drugs, physiotherapy and bracing, intra articular steroid injections, High Tibial Osteotomy, Unicondylar knee replacement. At advanced stage of arthritis Partial or Total Knee Replacement is the only answer.
