The upper end of the leg bone (femur) has a rounded head (femoral head) that fits into a socket (acetabulum) in the pelvis to form the hip joint. Full recovery is when the patient is able to perform all of his or her activities independently, relatively pain free, able to drive own vehicle and climb stairs. Minimal pain may be present at the end of three months. Full recovery period varies from person to person depending on age.
You would be able to stop using your crutches or walking frame to minimize pain. However, it may take up to three months for pain and swelling to settle down. It can take up to a year for any leg swelling to disappear.
THR is carried out on a patient so that patient is pain free and is able to carry out activities of daily living independently. It helps to alleviate the dependency on painkillers and lead a happy life.
Once discharged the physical therapist follows the patient at home and guides through the process of rehabilitation.
Alternatives to the procedure include osteotomies (rarely indicated), hip resurfacing (abandoned nowadays), or bipolar hemiarthroplasty (not proven to be superior to THR).
